Council wants to install solar panels on Surrey homes

A council has announced plans to install solar panels on the roofs of some of its properties.

Waverley Borough Council is looking for a firm to carry out the work in areas such as Godalming, Cranleigh, Haslemere and Farncombe.

It estimates that tenants will save between £80 and £125 per year on their electricity bills.

The authority said surplus power created by the panels would also be fed back into the national grid.

Councillor Keith Webster said: "Many of our tenants are over retirement age and I am sure seeing their electricity bills drastically reduced would be of a huge benefit to them.

"Any of us who are told we could get cheaper bills at no personal cost would be rubbing our hands so I'm sure support for this will be widespread."
