A murder victim whose body was found in a block of flats in Surrey had suffered multiple injuries, police have said.

The man, who has not been formally identified but is believed to be 56-year-old John Dowling, was found in Addlestone on Monday.

A post-mortem examination has begun but further work is required to clarify the cause of death, officers said.

Experts said the man had multiple injuries but the post-mortem will not be completed until later in the week.

'No clear motive'

Det Insp Jo Sidaway appealed for anyone who knew Mr Dowling to contact the force.

Ms Sidaway said: "We are currently pursuing several lines of inquiry to try to establish the circumstances leading to this death."

She added: "While at this time there is no clear motive for the assault, I would like to reassure people there is no reason to believe there is any increased risk to local people in Addlestone."

Officers are examining CCTV and the flat at Abell Court in Brighton Road is still cordoned off while forensic tests take place.
