Windlesham phones cut off after cable theft

Hundreds of Surrey residents are without phone services after thieves stole copper cable worth £20,000.

The theft took place overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday on New Road in Windlesham, according to Surrey Police.

Thieves took about 500m of telecommunications cable, cutting off phone services in the area.

Sgt Jonathan Castell said: "A large amount of wiring was taken... which would have required some time to steal and a vehicle to transport it."

"Lead and copper wiring is very attractive to thieves because of the high scrap value," he said.
