Pedestrian hit by car on A3 at Guildford

A pedestrian has been airlifted to hospital in London with life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a car on the A3 in Surrey.

Both carriageways of the A3 were closed after the crash leading to heavy rush hour disruption on Wednesday evening.

Police said the crash on the northbound carriageway happened between Guildford Cathedral and Dennis roundabout.

The injured man, who was in his 30s, was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Traffic congestion

Officers said the driver of the car involved, a Ford Mondeo, was uninjured.

The pedestrian had been seen crossing the northbound carriageway at about 15:15 BST when he was hit by the car which was travelling with the traffic flow, police said.

Both carriageways were closed while police dealt with the incident and carried out investigations.

The southbound carriageway was closed for two hours. One lane of the northbound carriageway was reopened at 17:45 BST to relieve congestion, officers said.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact the force.
