Thames Water apology over Guildford travel disruption

Thames Water has apologised for causing travel delays in Surrey on Monday.

Emergency repairs to a burst water main closed two out of four lanes of Guildford's one way system from midnight to about 1500 BST.

Traffic on the A3 was queuing southbound for 10 miles and northbound for eight miles.

Becky Johnson, from Thames Water, said: "It's really not good enough, it's bad planning on our part and we are really sorry."

She added: "We started work to repair a leak [on Sunday night]. We had to do the work at midnight to avoid disruption to customers but unfortunately repairing the road and getting it back to normal took too long."

Chris Hunter, one of the motorists affected, said: "I took two hours to get from Farnham to my place of work just outside Guildford. The whole of the town centre just gridlocked."
