Body of Woking pensioner found on A3 near Ripley

The body of a 76-year-old man has been discovered on a busy dual carriageway in Surrey.

Motorists travelling on the northbound carriageway of the A3 near Ripley saw the body at about 19:35 GMT on Thursday and alerted the emergency services.

Police said the dead man was a pensioner from Woking. His body was hit by a number of drivers who were unaware it was in the road.

The A3 was shut from Burnt Common to Ripley while investigations took place.

It reopened just after 03:30 GMT on Friday.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said the body was found by members of the public on the carriageway just south of the BP service station at Ripley.

Officers appealed for any witnesses to come forward, particularly any drivers travelling northbound along the A3 whose vehicles may have hit something.
