Hundreds of children under five saw their favourite books come alive in a Surrey forest as part of an attempt to encourage reading.

Surrey County Council organised the Big Read for Small Children event in the Alice Holt Forest, in Farnham.

Characters from books such as We're Going on a Bear Hunt and The Gruffalo helped the children read.

Tim Hall, cabinet member for children and learning, said: "It's never too early to start loving stories."
