Youths sought after 'stone' thrown into M3 traffic

Detectives working to trace youths who threw an object off a motorway bridge into rush-hour traffic believe the offenders are known in Sunbury.

Surrey police, who have been reviewing CCTV, have appealed for the help of the community in finding the youths.

Five or six youths threw what was thought to be a stone from a bridge over the M3 in Sunbury on 11 May.

It cracked a Mini Cooper windscreen but the driver, an 18-year-old woman, was able to keep control and stop.

Det Con Tracey Heneghan said: "The offence took place during rush hour. When you consider the speed and volume of traffic on a major motorway like the M3 at that time, it's clear that this incident could easily have resulted in tragic consequences.

"I feel certain that someone in the Sunbury area knows who is responsible for this."

She said officers carried out extensive searches in the area after the incident.
