Chobham St Lawrence church silverware stolen

Over £25,000 worth of silverware has been stolen in a raid on a church in Surrey.

Thieves ransacked St Lawrence Church, in Chobham between about 08:45 BST on Tuesday and 08:00 BST on Wednesday.

The intruders broke into a safe and stole more than £25,000 worth of church silverware and a brass candle snuffer from a wall.

They also damaged doors, locks and cupboards causing more than £1,000 worth of damage to the church.

Insp Martin Goodwin said: "It never ceases to amaze me the contempt some people have for places of worship and centres that support the community - these offenders should be thoroughly ashamed.

"Due to the extent of the damage caused to the church as a result of this crime, there will be a significant effect on the community.

"Not only is it of a financial impact for the church at a time austerity but it will now be unable to conduct community events."
