Guildford car park arson attack sees flats evacuated

Flats above an underground car park in Surrey had to be evacuated overnight following an arson attack on a car.

Firefighters called to Woodbridge Road, Guildford, found the rear window of a Volkswagen Golf smashed and the seat of the fire at the back of the vehicle.

The car was destroyed in the blaze, which also spread to a nearby electricity power box, causing damage.

Four residents from the flats were taken to hospital as a precaution after inhaling smoke.

The remaining occupants of the evacuated flats were taken to Guildford police station following the incident at 00:30 BST.

Appealing for witnesses, Det Insp Andy Haslam, of Surrey Police, described the arson attack as a "deliberate act of mindless vandalism".
