London woman dies after Sussex seaside rescue

A 31-year-old woman from London who got into difficulties while bathing in the sea off Sussex has died in hospital.

Tanzeela Ajmal, of Tisbury Road, Norbury, was in a group of four people who were on the beach at Camber Sands, near Rye, on Saturday afternoon.

She was pulled out of the water unconscious by the others - who were also injured - at about 16:40 BST.

Mrs Ajmal was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, but died on Wednesday evening.

'Desperately sad'

The three others, also from the Croydon area, were taken to the Conquest Hospital, in Hastings.

Two of them were in a critical condition with suspected lung problems from water ingestion and hypothermia.

However, they have recovered and were discharged from hospital on Sunday.

PCSO Dan Bevan, from Sussex Police, who was on duty on the beach, said: "This is desperately sad news. We were in the coastal control office when the alarm was raised and a team was with Tanzeela in less than a minute.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time."
