A 32-year-old man has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for attacking a father as he left a Surrey music festival with his wife and toddler son.

Peter Hart, 40, suffered serious head injuries when he was headbutted and punched as he was leaving Guilfest on 13 July in Guildford.

James Alexander Wallington pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm at a hearing on 14 November.

Mr Hart's wife, Nicola, was told he might die in hospital after the attack.

He recovered sufficiently well to be released from St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London in August.

The family were walking along King's Road when Mr Hart was attacked after he gestured to a vehicle to stop to let his family cross.

The car stopped and Wallington got out and attacked him.

"This was a horrific unprovoked attack on a man who was just trying to ensure he and his family could cross a road safely," said Det Con Dave Pellatt.

"The sentencing reflects the severity of this attack and I hope it goes some way to enabling the victim to move on with his life.

"He has suffered considerably, both physically and emotionally as a result of the brutal encounter."
