Man 'critical' after Basingstoke Canal rescue

Members of the public have helped to rescue a man from a canal in Surrey.

The man, who is in a critical condition in hospital, was pulled from the Basingstoke Canal, in the St John's area of Woking, on Friday.

His rescuers had started emergency treatment by the time ambulance crews arrived, Surrey Police said. The people who spotted the man in the canal raised the alert at about 17:10 BST.

The man was taken to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey.
