A man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a fire that gutted a large derelict building in the centre of a Surrey town.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service was called to the blaze in East Street, Epsom, at about 02.20 GMT on Thursday.

About 20 firefighters spent several hours tackling the fire at the two-storey building, which led to traffic restrictions.

Police said a 54-year-old local man had been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Both floors and the roof of the building were well alight when officers arrived, according to a spokeswoman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

A cordon is in place while fire officers carry out their investigation.
