Jailed dentist Mark Walewski ordered to pay back £360K
A dentist who was jailed for defrauding the NHS out of hundreds of thousands of pounds over six years has been ordered to pay £360,000 in compensation.
Mark Walewski, 69, who previously ran the New Dental Surgery in Hindhead, Surrey, admitted four counts of fraud.
He made more than £222,000 charging patients for treatment and then billing the NHS for the same work.
He was ordered to repay the money in a proceeds of crime hearing brought by NHS Protect at Guildford Crown Court.
Walewski was jailed for three years in February 2016.
The court heard Walewski - who had an NHS contract worth £340,000 and an annual income of £150,000 - made false claims from 2006 to 2012.
One claim was made for an examination of a 17-day-old baby who "obviously had no teeth".
The surgery is now owned and operated by a different practice.
Walewski, from Churt, near Farnham, admitted two counts of obtaining money transferred by deception and two counts of fraud by abuse of position.
Seventeen other charges remained on file.
