Man arrested over sex attack on girl in West Sussex

A man has been arrested after a 14-year-old girl was seriously sexually assaulted near the seafront in a West Sussex town.

The teenager was attacked in an area just off Beach Crescent, Littlehampton, when she refused the advances of a man who had offered her money for sex.

Sussex Police said the girl, who had spent the day with a friend, had spoken to him after her companion left.

Officers said a 19-year-old man was arrested and was being held in custody.

Det Sgt Tracy Edwards said: "This incident came about as a result of a very specific set of circumstances and we do not wish the public in general to be unduly alarmed.

"However, this was a frightening attack on a vulnerable young girl, who understandably has been left distressed by what has happened to her."

The force has also appealed for information about the incident, which happened at about 2130 BST on 19 July.
