A beach partygoer who went missing after talking about going for a late-night swim in Rye sparked a major search and rescue operation.

The man was reported missing by friends who were camping above the dunes at Camber Sands on Sunday evening.

Dover Coastguard, the Dungeness and Rye coastguard rescue teams and Sussex Police were involved in the search.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the man was discovered asleep near the beach.

Pete Legg, the senior watch manager with Dover Coastguard, warned people partying on the beach not to wander off.

He said: "An uncomfortable night's sleep for this young man has meant a sleepless night for the volunteers of the coastguard rescue service."
