A 22-year-old man is appearing in court after a police car was rammed during an early morning chase in West Sussex.

He was arrested after police pursued a stolen car in East Grinstead just before 0230 BST on Saturday.

Two police vehicles involved in the pursuit were slightly damaged as a result of the incident and one police officer suffered a minor injury.

The man was charged with taking a vehicle without consent, driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance.

An 18-year-old man arrested at the same time was later released without charge, as were six other people arrested in connection with the theft.

A 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, not connected to the theft of the vehicle, were arrested at the scene and were later charged with obstructing police officers.

They were remanded on bail to appear at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 3 September.

The road was closed for five hours while police conducted an investigation and was reopened at about 0800 BST on Sunday.
