A fire which badly damaged a sports pavilion in East Sussex is believed to have been started by someone living locally, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the Sydney Allnut Pavilion, used by Rye United Football Club and Rye Cricket Club, in the early hours of Saturday.

Sussex Police are treating the fire as arson and have appealed for information about anyone in the area at the time.

Rye United FC's website pledges to carry on with "business as usual".

'Significant effect'

The Sussex County League side's next game is on Tuesday evening at Ringmer.

Ch Insp Heather Keating said police would be carrying out extra patrols in the area.

"This crime will have a significant effect on those people who use the sports pavilion and the wider community," she said.

"I believe this was committed by someone living locally and that the community can help to identify those responsible."
