A section of a trail in East Sussex used by cyclists, walkers and horse riders is to be temporarily closed next month for improvement works.

Wet conditions in the winter caused the Cuckoo Trail to become soft and uneven.

Work to straighten and re-lay the path will take place about a mile south of Horam for a week from 6 September.

Later in the autumn, the trail between Sayerland Lane, in Polegate, and Summerhill Lane, in Hailsham, will shut for a water supply pipe to be replaced.

East Sussex County Council said the main had ruptured repeatedly over the past few years, leading to emergency closures on several occasions.

Work on the one-mile stretch of path is expected to last eight weeks, but diversions will be in place.
