Contractors have been chosen for the £3.5m renovation of a seafront landmark in East Sussex.

Rother District Council said Kent-based Neilcott Construction will lead the works on the Grade II listed King George V Colonnade in Bexhill.

The project also involves the construction of a new rowing club boathouse and a terraced lawn area alongside the De La Warr Pavilion.

The works are part of a wider scheme to regenerate Bexhill's seafront.

Council leader Carl Maynard said: "For me this is the most exciting part of the seafront project.

"The new rowing club will stand the test of time and will be a fantastic facility for youngsters from Bexhill and the wider area some time to come."

The first phase of the project, landscaping and resurfacing of the West Promenade, is already underway and is due to be completed in the autumn.

The Colonnade works are expected to start in October and are due to be completed in summer 2011.
