An investigation is under way into a suspicious fire that destroyed the clubhouse of a Sussex cricket club.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Wellbrook ground of Mayfield Cricket Club in Berkeley Road at 0110 BST.

Fire crews brought the fire under control by 0240 BST but the tea building and adjacent pavilion were severely damaged.

Sussex Police said it was too early to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Fire investigators have been at the scene alongside police officers.

'Extremely sad'

The village club, which has roots back to 1750, fields two teams in the East Sussex Cricket League and two youth teams.

Club chairman Peter d'Aguilar said: "It's extremely sad. There's a feeling of disbelief and despair.

"Unfortunately it does look as if it was a deliberate attack. It's a terrible idea that anybody would want to do that.

"Our first team were promoted this season and we were on a bit of a high and it's rather dampened our spirits."

Mr d'Aguilar said the club would begin fundraising to rebuild the clubhouse, which housed changing rooms and showers for the players.
