A British woman has died after being swept out to sea while on holiday in the US.
Ann Hauffe, 63, of West Sussex, and Angela Jewell were knocked into the surf by a wave at Carmel River State Beach in California on Monday.
A rip tide dragged the friends about 300ft (90m) out to sea, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's office.
Mrs Hauffe was plucked from the water by a rescue helicopter about 90 minutes later and taken to hospital but died.
The US press has reported that a lifeguard managed to rescue Mrs Jewell but Mrs Hauffe could not be reached until the coastguard arrived.
A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national. We are offering consular assistance."
