Residents evacuated after Littlehampton basement blaze

Residents had to be evacuated from a block of flats in West Sussex for several hours after a fire broke out.

Firefighters spent about an hour tackling the blaze in South Terrace, Littlehampton, which started at about 2340 GMT on Thursday.

The fire caused extensive heat and smoke damage to a basement flat.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said a team of Red Cross volunteers looked after the residents that were evacuated in freezing temperatures.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
