Brighton Sisters of Charity Lourdes Convent to close

A Brighton convent is to close its doors as its only two nuns retire.

The Sisters of Charity of Nevers have been in the city since 1904, but now the Lourdes Convent in Harrington Road is to close.

Sister Theresa is to return to Dublin and Sister Margaret Mary is to join other nuns at the order's convent in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The order cared for the homeless of Brighton and ran St Bernadette's Parish Primary School in the city.

The convent hosted a mass and lunch for the departing sisters on Sunday.

Sister Margaret Mary, speaking before the event, said: "There will be tears and laughter and many people we have walked with, and we know that some of them still need a helping hand."
