Hove boy injured in air gun shooting

An area of Hove was cordoned off and armed officers and a police helicopter attended the scene after a 13-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder.

Sussex Police said it received reports of the boy being hit by a rifle pellet while he was standing on the pavement in Buckley Close at 2215 BST on Sunday.

The first officers on the scene heard rifle shots and called reinforcements.

The boy was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics. A 20-year-old local man has been arrested.

'Deep wound'

Police, who are questioning the man on suspicion of firearms offences and wounding, also seized an air rifle.

"The boy, who suffered quite a deep wound near his collarbone, informed his mother immediately and so we were able to act quickly," said a police spokesman.

"On our arrival we found a window broken to the door of a block of flats and it looks like street lights had been shot at.

"Fortunately no-one else was injured during the incident."

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
