Vehicle driven into Chichester custody suite

A man has been arrested after a car was driven into a police custody suite in West Sussex, causing extensive damage.

Sussex Police said the Nissan Micra was driven into the main entrance of the building in Chichester at least twice on Tuesday at 1440 BST.

Firefighters were called to the scene to check the structural safety of the building and stop leakage from the car.

The 38-year-old man, of no fixed address, was not injured. He is being questioned by officers.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage, drink-driving and driving while disqualified.

"It was fortunate that no-one was in the entrance at the time," said a police spokesman.

"The door is off its hinges and there is extensive damage to the frame and glass.

"The custody suite is still operating as normal."
