A man has been arrested on suspicion of drugs possession after a 10-year-old girl was found with a "suspicious white substance" at an East Sussex school.

Police found what is believed to be herbal cannabis, along with white and brown powder, in Riverside, Newhaven, on Thursday.

Officers were carrying out a warrant at the address, issued after the incident at Southdown Junior School on 27 April.

The 31-year-old man has been released on bail until 18 August.

In a letter to parents the school's executive head teacher, Christine Terry, said the girl had been found with a "suspected illegal substance" but that no illegal activity had taken place on the site.

She added: "We would advise you that this substance was not found at school but was brought in from a home environment."
