Woman sexually assaulted in Hailsham while walking dog

Police patrols have been stepped up in an East Sussex town after a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted.

Sussex Police said the teenager was attacked as she walked her dog along a lane between Cacklebury Close and Sandbanks Way in Hailsham.

The victim managed to push the attacker off and flee the scene.

Det Insp Rob Morland said: "The victim is shocked by her ordeal and is receiving support from specially-trained officers."

Police have just released details of the incident which took place at about 1830 BST on Saturday.

Mr Morland added: "I would like to thank the local people of Hailsham for their support while we investigate this isolated incident.

"Extra high-visibility patrols from the neighbourhood policing team will be in the area and will be conducting house-to-house inquiries.

"I am appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed any suspicious behaviour to please contact police immediately."

The suspect was said to be white, aged in his 40s, with dark, straight hair.
