A search and rescue operation has taken place after a man was seen going into the sea in Brighton in the early hours.

A lifeboat, two coastguard teams and a helicopter spent three hours looking for the man in his 20s but the search was called off at about 0600 BST.

A further search was carried out on the beach near Brighton's West Pier later on Saturday but there was still no sign of the man.

Solent Coastguard said they would continue to look out for him.
