Teenager raped in street in Hailsham

A 17-year-old girl has reported being raped after being pushed to the ground by a man in East Sussex, police said.

The incident happened as the girl was walking along Ashley Gardens in Amberstone, near Hailsham, just before midnight on Friday.

Det Insp Rob Morland said Sussex Police were carrying out extensive inquiries in the area to try to trace the man and establish the full circumstances.

The man was wearing a dark top with the hood up and dark gloves.

'Acting suspiciously'

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen a man wearing dark clothing acting suspiciously in the Amberstone area in the early hours of Saturday morning," said Mr Morland.

"We advise women to continue to take common sense precautions when out and about, and to be mindful of their surroundings.

"But there is no reason for us to suggest that they should change their routine activities because of isolated incidents like this."
