Crawley flats evacuated as bin fire spreads to gas pipe

An elderly woman had to be rescued and a flat block evacuated after a bin fire spread to a gas pipe.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said about 20 firefighters tackled the blaze at the three-storey property in Warnham Road, Crawley, on Friday.

A spokeswoman said the elderly resident who was rescued was unhurt.

Crews spent about two hours tackling the blaze that started at about 15:50 GMT and damaged part of a ground floor flat and communal stairwell.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
