Sussex NHS trust axes 40 senior management posts

About half the senior management posts in human resources and procurement are to be axed from a Sussex hospital trust as it seeks to balance the books.

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust plans to shed the 40 posts by next April.

The trust, which runs Brighton's Royal Sussex and the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath, needs to find savings of between £20m and £30m.

Unison said staff were already under "considerable pressure".

Graham White, the trust's director of human resources, said: "This is not about moving the work from the back office to the front office, it is about deciding whether the work needs to be done at all any more.

"In the last 10 years, the NHS has increased 7% in size, yet it has increased by 60% in terms of management.

"We've got to give the decision-making back to the front line where they don't need to go through levels of approval and checking."
