A man has received serious injuries to his face and neck in an attack outside a Sussex pub.

Sussex Police said they believed the man had left The Corn Exchange in Hailsham to intervene in a dispute outside the pub at about 01:30 BST on Saturday.

They said it was not clear what caused the injury, but officers were searching for some form of bladed item.

The injured 52-year-old was treated at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Ch Insp Heather Keating said: "This was a particularly nasty attack that has had devastating consequences for the victim.

"It is an isolated incident following a dispute between people who are known to each other."

Police would like to speak to the driver of a BMW, possibly grey or silver, which drove away from the scene shortly after the incident.
