A 14-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of an East Sussex teenager who died in hospital the day after he was attacked.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of punching Connor Saunders, of Downsway, Woodingdean, Brighton, during a fight on 14 April.

Mr Saunders died from head injuries the day after the incident in Rottingdean.

The 14-year-old entered his not guilty plea before Judge Anthony Scott-Gall at Hove Crown Court on Friday.

A provisional trial date of 15 October at Lewes or Hove Crown Court was set and the teenager was released on bail.

Mr Saunders, 19, who played for Peacehaven and Telscombe Football Club, died at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

Hundreds of mourners including former X Factor singer Frankie Cocozza attended his funeral at St Margaret's Church, Rottingdean, earlier this month.

Sussex Police told two other boys, aged 13 and 14, who were both arrested on suspicion of murder following Mr Saunders' death, that no further action would be taken against them at this time.
