Sussex police officer dismissed over Brighton arrest

A Sussex Police officer has been dismissed from the force after being found guilty of using excessive force during the arrest of a man in Brighton.

The officer, who has not been named, appeared before a disciplinary hearing last week where he was dismissed without notice for gross misconduct.

He was based in Brighton when the incident happened in September 2011.

The officer was found not guilty of assault in connection with the incident by Sevenoaks magistrates in April.

Deputy Chief Constable Giles York said: "Sussex Police expects the highest personal and professional standards from anyone who works for us, even under duress.

"We will rigorously investigate any incidents where these standards are not maintained and as in this case, we will take action to ensure the integrity of officers and staff."
