Brighton man fined for claiming taxi hit him

A 50-year-old man from Brighton who laid down in front of a taxi and claimed it had hit him has been fined £80 for wasting police time.

According to Sussex Police, the man was seen damaging a tree in New Road, Brighton, before claiming the taxi had hit him.

He was dealt with by ambulance staff for over 45 minutes, before being taken to hospital after becoming unresponsive.

He was discharged a short time later.

PC Jimmy Conway, from Brighton and Hove Neighbourhood Police Team, said his actions were an "appalling waste of time".

"This individual took up valuable police and ambulance time at a particularly busy part of the evening, potentially putting Brighton and Hove residents in danger due to his thoughtless acts," he said.

Police said that when issued with the fine the man claimed he was drunk during the incident on 15 July.
