Sussex Police officer fined over arrest assault

A police officer has been fined over the assault of a woman in Chichester in West Sussex.

PC Michael Perkins, from the roads policing unit, was fined £495 and ordered to pay £900 in costs at Hastings Magistrates' Court.

The 49-year-old officer was found guilty of assault by beating at the hearing on Tuesday.

It was in relation to the arrest of a female driver in Chichester on 5 November 2011, the Sussex force said.

Mr Perkins was found guilty of assaulting the woman who he was transporting to custody after she had been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

He was found not guilty of using threatening words or behaviour.

A Sussex Police spokesman said Mr Perkins was suspended following the incident and a date for a disciplinary hearing would now be set.

Mr Perkins was based in Chichester at the time of the attack. The road policing unit has since moved to Arundel.
