Violent robber who absconded from Ford prison found

A violent robber who went missing from an open prison in West Sussex has been found in south London.

Peter Mahoney, who was convicted of racially aggravated wounding, possessing a firearm and robbery, was found at a house in Sidcup Road, Eltham at 01:30 BST.

The 37-year-old had left Ford Open Prison on Friday on day release but failed to return.

He was arrested on suspicion of being unlawfully at large.

Mahoney was serving an indeterminate sentence at Ford after he racially abused a man in a shop in Norwood, south London, in November 2008.

He later returned to the shop with an air pistol and shot the victim.

Last month Sussex Police revealed 86 inmates were missing from HMP Ford.
