The Brighton Dome theatre complex and Brighton Festival's heritage venues are to benefit from a £5.8m grant.

The funds from Arts Council England will be used to refurbish the Grade I-listed Corn Exchange, and renovate its Grade II-listed Studio Theatre.

A viewing gallery at the Corn Exchange and a service tunnel linking all parts of the complex will also be created.

It follows a successful bid by the council and the festival as custodians of the Royal Pavilion Estate.

Andrew Comben, chief executive of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival, said its goal was to be "one of Europe's leading arts festivals and a year-round international destination for artists and audiences".
