A man captured on CCTV may be a key witness to a rape in East Sussex, police have said.

The man was pictured in the area when a 21-year-old woman was raped on the lower promenade in Eastbourne at about 02:00 BST on Sunday.

She was walking alone towards the pier on the upper promenade after a night out with friends when she was raped.

Her attacker pulled her on to the lower promenade, east of the pier, where the rape took place.

Det Ch Insp Ian Williams said the victim was very distressed.

He said the man in the CCTV image could help police trace the rapist and appealed to anyone who might have been in the area at the time to come forward.

The attacker is described as Asian or mixed race, of medium build with a bald or shaved head.

He was no taller than 5ft 6in, with a round face and was clean shaven. He was wearing a dark jumper with a blue T-shirt underneath.
