Footballer arrested after referee head-butted

A footballer has been arrested after the referee was head-butted during a top-of-the-table match in the East Sussex League Premier Division.

Saturday's clash between St Leonards Social and Hollington United at Ingleside in Hastings had to be abandoned after 43 minutes.

The referee was taken to hospital with an injury to his nose.

Police said a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and bailed until 27 November.

The Referees' Association said where any assault took place on a match official its advice was to abandon the match and send in the appropriate report to the county Football Association.

"This appears to have been done following this incident," it said.

"It is then for the FA to conduct an enquiry into the incident and take any appropriate action, which may involve the police in serious cases.

"The FA have a range of sanctions they can apply involving participants in football."
