A man who was shot at through the front door of his Brighton home is thought to have been the victim of "mistaken identity", police have said.

The 39-year-old is being treated for a non life-threatening shotgun wound following the attack by three men at his flat in Elmore Road on Tuesday.

Armed police officers were called to the scene but the suspects had fled.

Sussex Police said it was supporting both the victim and the person thought to have been the intended target.

"We believe that this was a case of mistaken identity and as a result, the victim was subjected to a frightening unprovoked attack at his home," said Det Ch Insp Paul Rymarz.

He appealed for anyone who saw any suspicious activity or vehicles in Elmore Road on Tuesday to contact officers.
