Pedestrian injured by Cleveland Police car

An investigation is under way after a pedestrian was critically injured when she was struck by a police car on routine patrol on Teesside.

The incident happened on the A174 in Redcar on Thursday night.

The 29-year-old woman, who lives on the south coast, but was visiting relatives in the area, suffered serious head, spinal and pelvic injuries.

She was taken to James Cook University Hospital where her condition is described as critical but stable.

The accident is being investigated by the Cleveland Police professional standards unit, and has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Witnesses, or anyone who saw two women walking near the carriageway before it took place, are asked to contact police.
