A man is being treated in hospital for what police describe as "horrific" facial injuries after he was found badly beaten on Teesside.

Officers were called to recreation ground off Fabian Road in Eston in the early hours of Sunday.

The 21-year-old from Grangetown, was returning home from a night out with friends when he was attacked.

He is being treated for extensive facial injuries at Middlesbrough's James Cook Hospital.

Cleveland Police believe the attack was completely unprovoked.

Acting Det Insp Paul Husband said: "The man has sustained a severe beating and has suffered horrific injuries.

"It is a deplorable act carried out on an innocent young man who was returning from a night out in Middlesbrough."

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
