Redcar regeneration aims to create jobs

A council has drawn up plans for a multi-billion pound town revamp that it hopes will create thousands of jobs.

Redcar and Cleveland Council's blueprint includes building 7,000 new homes and attracting £4.5bn worth of private sector investment by 2025.

It also hopes to create more than 600 new businesses and move away from the town's reliance on the steel and chemical industries.

The plans go on display at Sunnyfield House, Guisborough on 15 October.

A council spokesman said: "In the economically crucial South Tees area, more than 2,000 jobs have been created or safeguarded, with £484m worth of private investment coming from firms including Huntsman, Asda and ElringKlinger.

"Significant progress has already been made in the regeneration of the borough, with £30m being secured to revive Redcar seafront.

"The turbulent economic times we have been through lately highlight the fact that we can no longer rely on traditional industries."
