Man arrested over death of County Durham baby boy

A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a baby boy in County Durham, police have confirmed.

Five-month-old Charlee Clark, who lived with his parents in Gainford, near Darlington, died in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary on Tuesday.

Durham Police said officers had been alerted by hospital staff, who were concerned that the baby had serious head injuries.

A 26-year-old man was arrested at an address in Gainford on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Durham Police said the child had initially been admitted to Darlington Memorial Hospital on Friday, but was transferred to Newcastle due to the seriousness of his condition.

He said the arrested man was being questioned by detectives in Darlington.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later in an effort to establish an exact cause of death.
