Crook assault victim dies in hospital after attack

A man who was assaulted at his home has died after 10 days in hospital.

Jonathan Gilbert, 43, suffered serious head injuries and died at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary after failing to regain consciousness.

The assault happened in Crook, County Durham, on 20 April at a house in Sycamore Gardens.

Christopher Morgan, 24, was remanded in custody at Durham Crown Court last week after being charged with assault. He will appear again on 6 July.

A post-mortem examination will take place later.

Discussions are expected to take place between police and the Crown Prosecution Service concerning what charges Mr Morgan will face when he next appears in court.
