Part of Hartlepool town centre was sealed off by armed police after an attempted raid on a building society.

No-one was reported hurt in the incident at the Darlington Building Society in York Road on Saturday.

Cleveland Police said a man in a grey hooded top with a scarf around his face threatened staff and demanded cash.

The man made off without any money. A force spokesman appealed for witnesses and said CCTV footage was being examined in an bid to identify the man.

A cordon remained in place for about two hours and was lifted shortly after 11:00 BST.
