Brotton cemetery solutions are outlined

Potential solutions to a cemetery capacity problem have been identified by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

Brotton cemetery is close to capacity and the council had considered moving burials to neighbouring villages.

That proposal angered local families, prompting hundreds to sign petitions and join a Facebook group calling for more space to be made available.

The council's cabinet has now agreed "short, medium and longer term" options.

Burials will continue to be offered in neighbouring cemeteries, primarily at Skelton, while other options are pursued.

They include using St Margaret's churchyard, changing the layout in the current graveyard to make space for 30 more plots and investigating buying nearby land.

The council said "panic buying" of spaces in an extended cemetery would not be allowed.
